In LoveToKnow's scary Ouija board stories article, you'll find two true, bad Ouija board stories. Both instances involved students - both old enough to know better - who were convinced that nothing bad would really happen.

A must read, these stories highlight the dangers of just fooling around or hanging out with the Ouija board and treating it as a toy. Once you are finished with that, read the story below based on a true account about a pair of high school students who should have known better.

Be Careful What You Ask For

In the late 1990’s, two college bound girls were spending one last night together in the late summer. It was something they had done all their lives, sleepovers that two best friends would do together as they whisper important secrets, laugh, and eventually grow up together. Unfortunately, Sammie and Maggie could not resist playing with fire one last time.

Sitting in a bedroom of Sammie’s house, they decided to try the Ouija board for a final time. Both girls had played with it on and off before as something to do for kicks in their early teen years. With varying results, it was just something to play with, and neither girl took it seriously.

Sammie’s house was more conducive as far as atmosphere goes with its high pitched, gabled roof and two bedrooms running the length of the upstairs. That night, the girls took the room with the antique iron bed and the faded flower wallpaper.

Fingers on the planchette, they watched it form lazy circles, appearing to warm up. Before either girl opened her mouth, it spelled out the word – H-E-L-L-O.

"That’s strange", commented Maggie. "It has never done that before".

Both girls were a little scared to go on when the planchette moved again, spelling out – H-A-P-P-Y-F-I-R-E.

Sammie was scared and a little irritated. "What does that mean," she asked. "Are you happy where you are because you are warm and have a fire?" The planchette moved in little circles, before moving directly over to the word "NO" on the board.

"What do you mean," Sammie demanded. Quickly the board spelled out – Y-O-U-R-H-O-U-S-E-T-O-N-I-G-H-T.

Next, as if the walls had filled with mice, scrabbling sounds came from behind the walls, all the walls. A gust of wind blew through the window causing the small stick used as a prop to drop to the floor, and the window closed with a bang. Both girls screamed.

"That's it," Sammie said, firmly. She stood up and said to no one in particular, "Prove it."

She got up, turned on the lights and packed the board away. Sleep was hard to come by that night. Maggie woke up at 2:00 a.m., drenched in sweat and crying because she was so hot. Sammie kept having uneasy dreams of her house in flames and smelling something acrid and strong. Both girls called it quits at four in the morning when they heard loud knocks on the wall behind the bed and ran down to finish the night on the couch.

The next morning, Sammie's mother laughed at them for falling asleep in front of the television set. "But of course, you would," Sammie's mother said. "I was tempted to come out and join you."

"Why," Maggie asked.

"Oh it's a little irrational of me, and we never told you girls about it, but we bought this house in the late 1970s and got a great deal because part of it had burned in a fire. A young man committed suicide by tossing gasoline around the floor upstairs and then lighting a cigarette. The whole upstairs had to be gutted and replaced."

Sammie's mother paused and laughed nervously, "Every year on what would have been the anniversary of the fire, I always have bad dreams and wake up smelling gasoline."

Opening the Door That Might Never Close

black horrible shadow

At Your Ghost Stories.com, a young man from Australia relates an experience he had in November of 2008 while sitting with his friends and playing with the Ouija board that someone's girlfriend had left sitting around.

After moments of vague circling, the young man and his friends repeatedly asked who was there, give us your name, etc. After the third question, the board spelled out O-P-E-N-Y-O-U-G-I-V-E.

Things quickly went downhill and stupidly, after a series of questions and dark answers, they asked the board for permission to leave. Essentially, they gave control over to whatever entity they seemingly contacted. Not only could they not end the session properly, but also life events began immediately to spin out of control for the young man, and he came to believe he was being stalked by a dark spirit.

The moral of these stories, and thousands like them, is to use the Ouija board with great care. What you don't know might follow you home, and you could end up with your own bad Ouija board story!.

Kelly is right. A spark can ignite gasoline. Physlink did an experiment to test if a cigarette could ignite gasoline and found that the cigarette temperature is "more than enough to autoignite gasoline". They concluded that igniting the gasoline depends on how the cigarette lands since the temperature of some parts of the cigarette wouldn't be hot enough. Another thing is that autoignition of gasoline vapors has a lower temperature requirement than gasoline, that's why there are no smoking signs at gas pumps.

Hi Keith,

I could be wrong, but I think the flame from the lighter itself would have probably been enough to ignite the fumes.

a lit cigarette won't set gasoline on fire, it needs to be an open flame or spark..
