Bigfoot Sightings

From LoveToKnow Paranormal

Bigfoot sightings occur throughout North America, and similar mysterious creatures have been reported in other areas of the world as well. Whether you believe Bigfoot is a myth or an undiscovered species lurking in the forests of North America, Sasquatch or Bigfoot remains alive and well in the public imagination and in the investigative activities of many groups.

Bigfoot sightings usually occur in forests.

The History of Bigfoot Sightings

Bigfoot, also known by the Native American name Sasquatch, reportedly roams the forests and remote areas of North America. Bigfoot sightings have occurred for centuries and are documented through many myths, legends and pioneer diaries and reports. The name Sasquatch is a phonetically spelled Indian word meaning "wild man" since early stories portrayed the Sasquatch as a wild human. North American Indians have a total of 60 different names for this creature. Many legends, including one retold by President Teddy Roosevelt himself, describe Bigfoot as a tall humanoid creature with some features resembling that of a large bear. But unlike bears, Bigfoot walks upright and not on all four feet, and it seems to have some semblance of higher intelligence.

Typical Location

Where do sightings occur? Sightings of the creature most commonly occur in North America, ranging from Canada down through the United States. Other countries have reported sightings of similar creatures, but no one is certain whether or not it is the same Bigfoot. The creature appears to inhabit remote, rough terrain, notably forests. Some sightings have also occurred on coastal beaches in Canada.

If you're curious about whether or not Bigfoot has been sighted in your own neck of the woods, the website BFRO Geographical Data provides a searchable map of the United States, documenting known Bigfoot sightings. Simply click on the state you wish to research, and a page provides sightings by county along with short summaries.

Characteristics of Reports

Many similar characteristics emerge when you study the various reports. These characteristics are even more striking when you consider that the reports range from modern-day to ancient legend.

  • Human facial characteristics: Many people comment on how the creature struck them as perhaps being a primitive human, especially in the face and the gaze of the creature.
  • Huge and muscular size: Eyewitness reports are strikingly similar, noting the size of the creature and especially the strong, broad chest.
  • Body covered in hair: Unlike many mammals that have fur, Bigfoot appears to have black or dark brown hair covering his entire body.
  • Very short neck: Most eyewitnesses note how short the neck of the creature is, almost to the point where the creature appears to have no neck at all.
  • Bad odor: As far back as a report from 1840, witnesses describe a foul odor akin to rotten meat or bad eggs that accompanies the creature. Some researchers speculate that it is a defensive mechanism similar to the odor emitted by skunks. Whatever the case, Bigfoot's smell is unmistakable.

Hoaxes

One of the major problems with Bigfoot reports is that the sightings themselves are rarely documented with photographs, video tape or even audiotape of the creature's sounds. Some film evidence exists, but the majority of reports rely upon legends and eyewitness testimony. It's important to consider not just the accounts, but who the eyewitnesses are and what their motives might be.

A recent hoax coming out of Georgia provides an excellent example of why you must be very careful to examine all of the evidence in an account before declaring it a valid sighting. Matthew Gary Whitton and Chuck Dyer claimed to have found Bigfoot remains in Georgia. An investigation into their background turned up evidence that the men had created the entire hoax to generate business for their new website and Bigfoot expedition trips.

Read Accounts of Sightings

If you're curious about what people have documented, many websites offer photos, video and written accounts including sworn testimony of Bigfoot sightings.

  • Sasquatch Information Society tracks reported Bigfoot sightings all across the USA.
  • The Bigfoot Research Organization attempts to document all Bigfoot sightings in North America.
  • While anyone can post to YouTube.com, you may want to see some of their Sasquatch sightings footage. Judge for yourself whether any of these videos are real or fake.
    • This archive includes Sasquatch sightings footage of both well-known and lesser known videos.
    • An Ontario, Canada sighting is documented here.
  • Encounters in British Columbia, Canada are related on Sightings.
  • The Oregon Bigfoot gallery has over 90 documented sightings, photos and more.

Bigfoot sightings are likely to continue for the foreseeable future, but this creature will remain the stuff of urban legends until incontrovertible proof is finally presented.

Hi Des, thanks for providing your valuable input! Could you share some of the evidence that you believe supports the idea that bigfoot is actually a demon?
