If you're looking for a resource to learn more about EVP recordings, you've come to the right place. Read on to learn more about how EVP recordings are made, what researchers believe they might be and where to find some authentic examples to listen to.

What Are EVP Recordings?

EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon. It is an anomaly that occasionally occurs when an electronic sound recording is produced. The anomaly is that when the recording is played back, you can hear voices on the recording that were not present when the recording was first made. In some impressive cases, those disembodied voices respond specifically to comments made in the room at the time.

The History of EVP Recordings

Swedish psychic and film maker Friedrich Juergenson was one of the first to use reel to reel tape recorders to record disembodied voices. However, the term "electronic voice phenomenon" was actually first used by Konstantin Raudive, PhD in the 1968 book Breakthrough: An Amazing Experiment in Electronic Communication with the Dead. Raudive's work expanded upon Juergenson's accidental discovery of the phenomenon and brought in a number of scientists and theologians in the course of the research. Raudive and the publishers encouraged scientists across the world to attempt to replicate those results. For the most part, the mainstream scientific community avoided undertaking any serious study of EVP.

The Science Behind EVP Recordings

The simplest way to understand what this phenomenon represents and what science, so far, fails to explain is by first understanding the components of a typical EVP recording experiment. Also, by carefully understanding how each component of the experiment can affect your results, you can set up your recording in a way that greatly improves your ability to reduce erroneous results and the possibility that you'll record an authentic EVP.

A Recorder, An Environment and Interaction

The three components of a basic EVP experiment include the recording device that you decide to use, the location or environment where you place the recording device and how you decide to interact with the phenomenon.

  • The Sound Recorder: The earliest sound recorders, whether it was Edison's first "phonograph" recording on a wax cylinder or Parisian inventor Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville's "phonautograph", all had one thing in common. They converted sound waves in the room into a physical form that could later be used to reproduce those same sound waves. Later, the world of electronics allowed the conversion of sound waves from a microphone into "electromagnetic fluctuation" that gets imprinted into magnetic tape or, in the case of today's digital recorders, a digital memory chip. EVP was first noticed when magnetic reel-to-reel tapes were used to record sound.
  • The Location: The environment you choose to study EVP should be as free from various forms of radiation as possible. These include radio waves, cell phone signals, handheld radios and high power electrical systems. Most people don't realize that the air around us is filled with a variety of invisible signals that can potentially affect electronic components including radio waves, microwaves and electromagnetic radiation from all of the sources listed above.
  • Interaction: The final component of your experiment involves how you choose to interact with the phenomenon, and this is what separates a true scientist from an amateur. By systematically studying how the phenomenon responds to different stimuli, you may be able to identify a response pattern that could provide clues as to the source of EVP recordings.

Looking For the Source of the EVP Phenomenon

In trying to understand the source of the phenomenon, it's important to consider a few known factors about the anomaly.

  • The phenomenon was first noticed on magnetic reel-to-reel tape recorders.
  • The recorded voices are typically not heard by human ears at the time of recording.
  • Many cases exist where the recorded voices respond to interaction.

These existing facts offer an important starting point in your own EVP research. These facts suggest that the phenomenon is somehow related to electronic systems or recording media and not actual sound waves. The fact that many recordings respond to questions suggests that whatever creates the electronic voice imprint might have some form of intelligence. Some skeptics believe that all recordings are the result of normal environmental radiation, while many EVP researchers suspect that the phenomenon could either be the spirits of the deceased, a psychokinetic artifact of human consciousness or communication from a parallel dimension. Still others suspect demonic origins to the phenomenon.

Examples of EVP

These days, you'll find a wide variety of researchers, ranging from truly scientific to the unprofessional and silly, who post actual EVP recordings on the Internet. The following list offers a few examples of some fairly good quality recordings.

Will We Ever Understand EVP?

Ascribing spiritual or "paranormal" causes to a very real phenomenon is a very human tendency. In the end, history shows that science brings humanity enlightenment. Germs, climate and gravity were all assigned supernatural characteristics by humans until science eventually caught up and explained these "strange" things. In time, and through adhering to the scientific process, the cause of weird and wild happenings throughout the paranormal will eventually be discovered and explained. The explanation may very well be ground breaking, and it could potentially transform the world with new awareness and understanding.
