Famous American Psychics And Psychic Research

Ever since human beings started to contemplate the interaction between mind and matter, certain individuals have occasionally stepped forward throughout the years and presented cases where psychic ability was so apparent that it was impossible to dismiss. All of the following famous American psychics became well known after psychic abilities became an American obsession, resulting in the establishment of parapsychology in the early 1900s. The following list represents psychics of diverse backgrounds and personalities who were able to convince entire crowds that their extra-sensory abilities were authentic.

Edgar Cayce

Edgar Cayce is easily the most famous psychic in the world. Born in 1877 in the state of Kentucky, it didn't take long for the world to recognize that he was a unique individual. At the age of 24, Edgar fell sick and lost his voice. Resorting to hypnotism as an alternative method of treatment to restore his voice, Cayce entered a trance and then described the correct medical treatment for his condition. The exceptional nature of this event comes from the fact that Edgar had no medical training and only had a grammar school education, yet he diagnosed his medical condition and the correct medical cure while under hypnosis.

Once word spread of the nature of his cure, Edgar was overrun with requests from the sick for a "reading". His earliest sessions, conducted with his wife asking questions and his secretary taking notes, provided treatments for these requests. These early readings proved that Cayce not only had the ability to "view" these individuals remotely, but he could correctly diagnose their illnesses and determine a cure if one was available. By 1923, Cayce met a friend that had an interest in metaphysical philosophy and suggested Cayce use his trance to find answers to the deeper questions about life and the universe. By the time of his death in 1945, Edgar Cayce had performed over 14,000 readings and left behind a long-lasting legacy.

Ingo Swann

In 1971, Ingo Swann was employed at the United Nations. However, he shared the same interest in parapsychology as so many others did during the 1970s. Ingo's interest was unique because he had certain psychic abilities that he was hoping to understand, and which he attempted to explain by becoming involved in the early Church of Scientology run by L. Ron Hubbard. He eventually became involved with fellow Scientologist, Hal Puthoff, a physicist working (at the time) at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). From 1971 until the early 1980s, Ingo let Puthoff conduct ESP experiments on him, and ultimately Ingo was credited with developing the "Controlled Remote Viewing" training manual used by the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) to train Army remote viewers in the collection of intelligence through psychic means.

Sylvia Browne

American psychic Sylvia Brown has been a psychic her entire life, offering readings for family and friends. Eventually, she decided to found "The Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research" in 1974 in order to study the phenomenon of psychic functioning. Sylvia employs the deep "sleep" technique of Cayce and believes in his same past-life, Christian-based philosophy. Today, she continues to write books, make media appearances and conduct lectures. In 1986, she founded the Society of Novus Spiritus to promote her Gnostic Christian philosophy about paranormal functioning.

John Edwards

As a New York City native who experienced psychic abilities at a very young age, John Edwards became a published author on the topic as well as the host of a popular television series and easily classifies as a famous American psychic. After meeting another famous psychic, Lydia Car, who told John that his purpose was to teach people through his psychic abilities, he started to explore becoming a professional medium in order to help people who've lost loved ones. Since then, he went on to author multiple books on psychic abilities as well as serving as a host on Crossing Over with John Edwards. Today, he remains one of the most recognized American psychics.

Jane Butts (Roberts)

Born in 1929, Jane Roberts was the public name for Jane Butts, the woman who eventually became a catalyst for the New Age Movement. In 1963, Jane and her husband, Robert Butts, began experimenting with the ouija board and she entered a trance. In her meditative state, she began channeling an entity that she later named Seth. Through the 1970s, Jane published several books based on those channeled sessions that eventually became known by her fans as the Seth Prophecies. Her books include The Coming of Seth, The "Unknown" Reality and several others. She passed away in 1984 leaving behind a legion of fans and followers.

Other Famous American Psychics

In addition to the well-known names listed above, America also produced a number of other famous individuals with psychic abilities, including:

  • Allison DuBois - She is channeler that the television show Medium is based on.
  • Irene Hughes - Hughes was once listed by Pageant Magazine as one of America's top ten psychics after predicting the deaths of JFK and Robert Kennedy in a newspaper column.
  • Doreen Virtue - Doreen Virtue is a clairvoyant who believes that her guides are actually angels that are here on Earth to guide us.
  • James Van Praagh - James Van Praagh realized his ability to communicate with the dead at a young age and now makes appearances and even offers online courses.
