Cold Reading Scams

Participants are often stunned by the accuracy of so-called "cold readings", or psychic readings in which the psychic has absolutely no way of knowing the individual seeking her help. These psychics dazzle with their ability to pinpoint the problem, come up with the name of a jilted lover or understand your pain. Cold readings draw us into the entire psychic phenomena with their eerie accuracy and make us believe in the psychic’s powers through her uncanny acumen.

But are cold readings really psychic phenomena or something more mundane? Unscrupulous con artists use so-called cold readings to bilk their victims. During a cold reading, con artists ask general questions until they get a "hit". The hit may be as subtle as reading a change in the subject’s body language or eye contact or a direct confirmation they’ve hit upon something of interest. The con artist then proceeds to ask more and more questions, narrowing down the choices, all with an air of confidence and mystery to bedazzle the unwitting victim.

So many victims of unscrupulous con artists thirst for answers to troubling questions. These victims truly yearn for genuine help, but their vulnerability makes them ripe targets for these types of cons.

What follows the cold reading are suggestions for return visits. Each visit requires more and more money. While your initial reading may have been free, return visits become expensive. Over time, the unwitting victim may spend hundreds of dollars or find himself manipulated into giving money or possessions to the con artist. The con artist threatens dire consequences, injury or even death if the victim discontinues the sessions. A frequently used tactic includes claims that the victim is "cursed" and only the psychic can remove the curse. The initial session may have been free, but victims pay over time, sometimes with their life savings.

During your free reading, be cautious during the general question and answer period. Try not to divulge more than a simple answer to the questions posed to you. Genuine psychics do need some give and take during the reading, but won’t be put off by your reticence to reply.

Credit and Identity Scams

Another fraud consists of credit card or identity theft. Never divulge your credit card information during a free reading. If the website or psychic asks for a credit card "deposit" to hold your appointment for a free reading, do not give it out. No reputable clairvoyant will ask for such a thing. Information sent online can be easily forwarded to other people, and that includes your credit card and personal identity information. Keep your credit cards, social security number, driver’s license and other key identification safe and secure and don’t divulge it to anyone. Pay by cash if you choose to return for additional readings.

Trust Your Instincts

Perhaps the most important piece of advice is the simplest: trust your instincts. If you feel threatened, manipulated or forced to continue a reading, back out of the reading and leave. If your instincts are telling you something is wrong, honor them. Your own psychic abilities may be kicking in to warn you against deception!
