What are Ghost Sightings Cams?

Ghost video cams are set up in a location that is generally accepted as being haunted. Ghost cams, usually web cams, are then hooked to a computer with an open line to an Internet connection. Armchair ghost hunters then pull up the website for ghost sightings cams and watch to see if they catch anything.

Addictive Past Time

Fair warning, viewing ghost sightings cameras can be addictive. While it seems silly to imagine that sitting and staring at an empty room on your computer screen could even pass as entertainment, you may find that it is a lot more entertaining than you could ever imagine. Was that a shadow you just saw? Wait – what was that flicker in the corner of the screen? Deprived of the sensory input of sound, your visual acuity becomes more finely tuned as you search for evidence of ghosts on your computer screen. Actually, this is just how paranormal investigators view their own investigation footage by listening to the audio and watching the video separately. This allows them to focus in on one sense at a time so that they don't miss anything.

Tips for Viewing Ghost Cam Footage

  • Many ghost cams require frequent page refreshing, so be sure to do this.
  • Just as paranormal investigators remove sensory stimuli when reviewing evidence of their ghost hunts, you can also benefit from the removal of external stimuli such as ambient light and background noise. When you have moved to a location where you can focus only on the visual images of the recorded digital footage, you will be more likely to notice small visual changes.
  • Familiarize yourself with the layout of the area where the camera has been set up. Are there windows? Be aware of this because passing cars could cause reflections on the walls that may be mistaken for a ghost. Are there doors or areas with changing shadows? All of these should be taken into account as you view the camera.
  • Be prepared to think critically. If you do spot something while watching the web cam, make a list of all possible explanations, and then work through your list to see whether or not these are truly feasible explanations.
  • Remember that bugs, especially filmed in the infrared light used on many ghost cameras at night, can appear to be all sorts of odd things like orbs or rapidly moving entities. If the image zips around and seems to come and go out of the picture frame, then it's probably a bug.
  • Keep a log of what you see. Note the time, the location and exactly what it is you have seen. Be as descriptive as possible. Also, note your impressions about what you think the possible explanations could be for what you've seen.

What to Watch For

There are a number of things to watch for when reviewing ghost camera footage.

  • Movement: A flicker of movement in an otherwise empty room could alert you to watch further
  • Shadows: Watch shadows that especially appear to be away from surfaces or have more of a misty or hazy appearance. Watch for shadows that appear to have a different color or density from the shadows surrounding them.
  • Mist: Do you see a haze or a mist forming in a room? Is it away from heating ducts and air conditioning vents? If you spot a mist, watch carefully to see what happens to it.

Ghost Cameras on the Web

There are a number of ghost cameras available on the Internet. Below are just a few of the ghost camera sites:

  • The Willard Library is one of the most well-known ghost cameras on the Internet. Actually, the library has a few ghost cameras set up in different locations in the library. Watch for the infamous Lady in Grey. These cameras have a screen capture function that allows you to submit evidence you find to the library.
  • The Gettysburg Battlefield ghost cam is currently set up on Seminary Ridge, overlooking McPhereson's woods where the first battle began. Gettysburg is considered one of the most haunted locations in the United States, so who knows what you'll find.
  • Travel to Ireland and view the Linen Mill ghost cam.

If you've always wanted to ghost hunt, this just may be your opportunity. The only equipment required is a computer and a good eye, so why not visit one of the ghost cameras listed above or Google the term "ghost cam" and see if you can capture a ghost?
