Ghost Voices
From LoveToKnow Paranormal
Ghost hunters and paranormal researchers around the world often find themselves trying to understand how and why ghost voices can be heard on electronic recording equipment or sometimes without the aid of any equipment. Ghost voices, often called EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomenon are one of the most common paranormal events that are backed by more evidence than any other phenomenon.
Are Ghost Voices Real?
The true nature of ghost voices is difficult to discern, due to the fact that the events are so unpredictable, and at times even the words that the voices convey appear meaningless. However, there are other times when the ghost voices are very clear and make perfect sense. Even though many generations of researchers have captured these voices with various forms of electronic equipment through the years, no one knows where the voices come from. With that said, there are plenty of theories and speculation about these mysterious voices.
Disembodied Voices
Fans of the television show Ghost Hunters might recall the episode where the TAPS team investigated the Clovis Avenue Sanitarium in California. During their exploration of the basement, Jason and Grant both hear a very loud voice say, "I like the one in the hat". Jason was, in fact, wearing a baseball cap, but no one else was in the room or anywhere near it. The voice sounded so loud and clear that the investigators started searching the room for a hidden speaker to no avail. While disembodied voices that are heard without the aid of electronic equipment are fairly rare, this phenomenon does take place. The following are a few private reports by individuals who claim to have heard ghost voices without the use of a recorder.
- Jane, from Center, PA, decided to move her family out of their haunted house. On the last day there, she heard a deep voice ask, "Where you going?"
- In the Hannum House Ghost Hunters' episode, two investigators heard a young girl say, "Mommy".
- In the Moosham Castle episode of International Ghost Hunters, a male voice was heard in the torture chamber.
- In Gardener, Massachusetts the Ghost Hunters, yet again, visited a home where a man could be heard calling out, "Ginger".
- The Bell Witch is another example of a story where the voice of the spirit that's haunting a location can be heard clearly.
Since capturing evidence of audible voices depends so much on timing, it is rare to find evidence of those voices - although people around the world report hearing disembodied voices in haunted homes and locations fairly often.
Voices of Ghosts on Electronic Devices
Recorded spirit voices are one of the most common forms of paranormal evidence, and almost every ghost hunting society or group has a catalog of EVPs from the group's investigations. The practice of recording EVPs has a very long history, and even today there are groups and organizations dedicated to the study and research of the phenomena. Theories and speculations abound, from voices of the dead to auditory illusions, but not a single theory explains every case that comes along. The following are a few examples of EVP voices, and how sometimes the event is so stunning that it even makes the news.
- A UK woman was stunned when she could hear a scary voice on her home movie saying, "I am alive".
- At the Stone's Public House in Ashland, Massachusetts, investigators captured a voice on tape saying, "Let me out".
- In Middelborough, Massachusetts, investigators Ed Beaulieu and Len Anderson captured a voice saying, "Help me".
- At Bodelwyddan Castle, a ghost tour guide named Rachel reported that she was able to record a voice saying, "Hold me close" inside the castle.
More Information
Whether these are voices beyond the grave, or simply tricks of the imagination, the voices continue to shock and surprise many people around the world. Even seasoned investigators are often unnerved by the reality of these voices and the meaning behind the phenomena - that if the voices are real, then what does that say about the nature of the world around us?.

Hi Jackson, It's always good when you can share your home with pleasant spirit roommates. Maybe the mother can fill you in on the rest of the house history. (Enjoyed your pun.) Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Keep us posted.
-- Contributed by: Sally PainterMy husband and I recently purchased a 1940 farmhouse in Missouri and are renovating it. I have always heard that renovating can awaken any spirits but I am a believer now. I have had several experiences such as tapping on my shoulder playfully and more recently, when I was cooking dinner, I heard (VERY clearly) a female voice say "Wow, that smells good". There were no other females present but me and the tv/radio was off. I replied "Thank you" and kept on cooking. I feel a happiness in my home and never anything dark or sinister. I have also captured numerous orbs on my digital camera, beginning when we were just contemplating buying the house and as recently as last week, when I took a picture of our bedroom after we finished it. I know that a man passed away in my house in 2007, because his mother lives next door...but am unsure of total history of the home. Would LOVE to know.
