What is EVP?

EVP stands for electronic voice phenomenon. There is a theory that disembodied spirits can imprint their voices on electronic media such as digital audio recorders, film and audio tapes.

In an interview with Paranormal Underground magazine, parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach explained the theory of EVPs. According to Auerbach, an EVP is something that occurs when an apparition, which is pure consciousness without vocal chords, psychokinetically affects an electronic medium, leaving an audio imprint on said medium.

It is important to distinguish an EVP, which can only be heard on recorded media, with a disembodied voice, which can be heard both by the human ear at the time the sound is made and on some kind of recording media. Many people mistakenly refer to disembodied voices as EVP.

How is EVP Obtained?

There are a number of ways that electronic voice phenomenon is obtained. The simplest way is using a digital audio recorder in a location that is reported to be haunted. According to paranormal investigator David Vacknitz of A.P.A.R.T. of WA, EVPs are typically obtained on digital audio recorders not during formal question and answer sessions, but when investigators are walking around the site talking.

"They seem to like to butt into conversation," Vacknitz says.

Other, more complex methods of obtaining EVP are also used. ITC researcher Mark Macy lists a number of interesting ways to obtain EVPs on his website, World ITC. The site is also a good place to go to play EVP recordings.

Many paranormal investigators and researchers are seeking new ways to obtain clearer and better EVPs. For instance, the Tennessee Spirit Mike is said to muffle human conversation and ambient noises while zeroing in on spirit voices. There are a number of EVP recordings you can listen to that have been captured with the Tennessee Spirit Mike on the aforementioned web page.

Other researchers are working on finding ways to help entities manipulate electromagnetic frequency (EMF) with a speech chip that converts the spirit-modulated EMF into words or allophones. Two such devices are the Talker Box, made from Digital Dowsing’s Talker kit and the Ovilus, also from Digital Dowsing. There is a video on which you can see a SpeakJet box (the prototype for the Talker kit) being used by Rob Fitzgerald of the Dead Science Podcast.
