Psychic Tests
From LoveToKnow Paranormal
Many people who believe they experience a particular level of sensitivity or prior awareness of events yet to come often seek out psychic tests that can help them determine whether or not those percepions are extrasensory in nature. Learn where to find those tests and what they entail.
The History of Psychic Tests
Psychics have been around since ancient times, and they've existed under many names including spiritualists, necromancers, mediums, clairvoyants or shamans. Below is a short list of a few of the more famous psychics throughout history.
- Dr. Franz Antoine Mesmer, a famous psychic during the late 1700s and early 1800s, was one of the first to establish the "Spiritualist" movement.
- Edgar Cayce became famous for entering a self-induced trance and answering questions or providing insight about the future and many other topics of his day. He reportedly predicted the collapse of communism.
- Michel de Nostredame, better known as "Nostradamus", was an acclaimed medical doctor of his day. He reportedly recognized Pope Sixtus V years before he became Pope, and he predicted the death of Henry II. After his death, many claim that his prophecies predicted the reign of Napoleon, Stalin, Hitler, the two World Wars and many other major world events.
- Ingo Swann is one of the most famous modern-day psychics. He was one of the first researchers involved in the CIA and Stanford Research Institute's study of psychic phenomenon, and he invented the term "remote viewing". Through a variety of psychic tests and experiments, researchers claimed to successfully verify Ingo's psychic ability.
How to Test Psychic Abilities
The field of psychic phenomenon is rife with hoaxers and con artists. In 1882, Sir William Barrett, Henry Sidgwick and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle founded the Society for Psychical Research in order to scientifically study psychic abilities. A large number of their tests ended up debunking and exposing numerous frauds. Both science and religion have their own methods of performing psychic tests.
Religious Tests of ESP
The ancient forms of psychic ability, such as divination or sorcery, have been mentioned in countless religious texts throughout history. Each religion has its own version of psychic tests.
- Christianity: Psychics, in the form of sorcery and divination, were mentioned throughout the Old Testament by the early biblical authors. Aside from writing disparagingly of wizards, sorcerers and mediums - one section, Deuteronomy in particular, outlines a specific psychic test to determine whether or not a "seer" is truly a prophet. The test is simply to observe whether or not any of the predictions do not come true. This means that even if numerous predictions are successful, a single false prediction identifies a "false prophet".
- Judaism: In Judaism, the Torah also assumes a negative attitude toward the occult. The Torah advises against becoming "a sorcerer, soothsayer or engager of witchcraft". The differentiation within Judaism is whether the power is attributed to a source other than God.
- Islam: The Islamic faith teaches that Allah alone sees the unknown, and healone knows what is good. Therefore, believers must seek His help directly, not indirectly.
- Wicca: The Wiccan faith believes that psychic gifts are natural human abilities that have been socially suppressed for centuries. The belief is that the suppression comes from both a lack of scientific understanding and also religious control and fear. In the Wiccan faith, these abilities are inherent within every human, and they are considered natural gifts provided to all of humanity in varying degrees. In Wicca, the test of psychic ability is only to question which degree of the gift is apparent in the person's life.
Scientific Tests of ESP
If you believe you may have some form of psychic abilities, such as an uncanny ability to predict an event before it takes place or an awareness of what people are going to say before they say it, you may want to perform a few simple tests to determine whether or not you are psychic.
- Online Tarot Reading is a way to test your skill with using tarot cards to predict the future. The hidden cards are from a 22-card deck with special symbols that tell a story once they are revealed. Psychics believe the power of the ability of these cards to foretell the future comes from the card handler, not the cards themselves.
- Zener Cards are one of the oldest tests for psychic ability, first developed by the J.B. Rhine during his ESP research. The test is fairly simple; you attempt to predict which of the five symbols the hidden one is. This psychic test uses statistics to determine the level of your gift.
- Remote Viewing Tests are for those with a strong ability to sense remote places and events. This particular test provides you with "coordinates", that you use to try to remotely view the "target". Follow the directions carefully.
- PsychoKinesis is another fascinating possible psychic ability, and this test is one of the more fun ones. Meditate or concentrate on moving the bar either to the right or left. The goal is to cause the computer generated random number algorithm to sway more to one side or the other.

Are Psychic Abilities Real?
The question whether psychic abilities are real or not is as old as time. Even though science entered the field in the early 1900s in the form of parapsychology, this important question still remains unanswered. Throughout the world, there are many schools of thought regarding psychic ability. Some believe that only a few select humans are born with the ability; others believe that everyone is born with inherent psychic functioning. Still others believe that there is no such thing. Some day science may finally uncover more answers. Until then, what you choose to believe depends mostly on your belief system and your own personal experiences.
